“And it starts like, ‘oh, cool, we’re all supposed to meet … And it starts getting pretty cool. Like you don’t gotta worry about your parents being drug addicts, alcoholics. You don’t gotta worry about all that stuff. Like I said, it’s not alright, but once you meet a lot of people that are in the same boat, it’s like ‘oh, it’s okay, I’m not alone.”

Belonging is probably most commonly associated with its interpersonal components.
Using the components of Goodenow’s (1993) definition, there are 4 components defining intersocial belonging:
Accepted/respected:
- Co-creating list of class norms establishing respect for others
- Example: Create a discussion board post at the beginning of class where students can post thoughts on how to create original and response posts to assigned prompts; include a discussion about how to engage in respectful disagreements
- Offering choices allowing for student agency
- Example: different options for projects that might include a traditional writing project, presenting to the class, and/or creating a multimedia product on an assigned topic
Included:
- Activities that encourages every student to participate
- Activities that may not be related to class content
Supported:
○Destigmatizing supports that many students may need but not voice – Academic assistance, housing/food insecurity
